It was in 1998 that Yamaha launched its open class super sport bike named as the Yamaha YZF-R1. It is a 998 cc, liquid-cooled, 16-valve, DOHC, inline four-cylinder bike. It has seen a number of modifications made on a yearly basis, keeping the changing trends and customer needs in mind. It is due to the innovativeness of Yamaha that the bike garnered the most esteemed ‘Bike of the Year’ award in 2009 given by Motorcyclist Magazine. The Yamaha YZF-R1 got this honor for its MotoGP® inspired technology for engine and chassis, along with its sybaritic finishing.

Yamaha YZF-R1 is also the first ever bike with cross plane crankshaft, which places each linking rod 90° from the following one, causing an uneven fueling interval of 270°- 180°- 90°- 180°. This unequal interval is the root cause of the Yamaha YZF-R1’s smooth power delivery, as it keeps down the internal crankshaft torque. It provides the advantage of two engines in one; the first one of a low rpm torque feeling like one gets in a twin engine, and the second one of a high rpm power provided by an inline four. Yamaha YZF-R1’s engine takes on a pairing-type balancer, which revolves in the diametric contradiction to the crankshaft for maximizing the comfort of the rider.

There are a few more modern technologies that Yamaha uses for this bike with the sole aim of providing it with the utmost power. These include YCC-I®, known as Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake, which extends the power diffusion, and YCC-TTM, a fly-by-wire technology for a quick accelerating response. Yamaha YZF-R1’s fuel injection system is quite efficient in rendering maximum mixture of air and fuel, which in turn provides optimum power and a smoothened acceleration. The pistons made of aluminum add to its power properties. Yamaha has used intake-valves made of Titanium for keeping them lightweight.

For a smooth control and handling, the Yamaha YZF-R1 is with an aluminum frame that provides a surpassing rigidity balance. For maximum centralization of mass, its rear frame is formed of magnesium. Its suspension system comprises of SQQI front forks, using the technique of independent damping, where the left and right forks work for handling the compression and rebound damping respectively. It has a top speed of 165 mph, and fuel mileage of 9.4 L/100 km.
